Crown Lengthening

Woman smiling after crown lengthening at John A. Lindsay and Raul A. Perez, Periodontics and Implantology in Boca Raton, FLIf you smile at yourself in the mirror and find that your teeth seem a bit short, it means that your crown is covering up some of your teeth. The teeth themselves should be a similar size to other peoples' teeth. During a crown lengthening procedure, the soft tissue and even some bones will be removed to expose more teeth. The procedure can be performed on one tooth, a few teeth, or even the entire gumline.

After that, you will have a nice appearance with a symmetrical and clean smile, but other than cosmetic purposes, crown lengthening is used for preparing the installation of a dental crown, exposing hidden cavities, and revealing more teeth so that other procedures and devices can be performed and inserted.

Undergoing crown lengthening has many benefits. The procedure itself is short, about one hour, and you can go back to work right after. Also, it only needs to be done once, and with more exposed teeth, more areas can be covered when brushing and flossing, minimizing tooth decay. You might be caught off guard when crown lengthening is suggested to you, as this is indeed a surgical procedure. However, our professionals at John A. Lindsay and Raul A. Perez, Periodontics and Implantology will make sure that you are informed and comfortable all the way through.

What to Expect

Before the surgery, we will examine your medical history as well as your gums, teeth, and bone structure using an x-ray. Your current health conditions and medications will also be taken into consideration. We will make sure that your body is eligible for this treatment and decide exactly how much of your gumline will need to be removed.

Most people will get local anesthesia or some form of sedation. During this quick surgery, gum tissues will be removed with a laser or other specialized instruments. Afterward, saltwater will be applied to that area before suturing the gums back together. Sometimes, a bandage may be placed for extra protection.

As with any other surgical procedure, there are some risks involved. Bleeding might occur, leading to the possibility of an infection. However, crown lengthening is a common procedure among patients, and if executed properly with care, the chances of an infection happening is very low.

Recovery

Most people recover in approximately three months. You will be able to do normal day-to-day activities right after the surgery, but keep in mind to avoid strenuous tasks for the first few days. Be sure to drink plenty of water to speed up the healing process, and avoid spicy, sticky, or hard foods. There might be some level of pain as the effects of anesthesia wear off, but we will usually prescribe medications such as pain relievers and special mouthwashes. Try to avoid having your tongue licking the treated gums, and refrain from pulling your lips up to check on the surgical site. Your gums might be sensitive to hot and cold temperatures, but that will gradually ease away.
